Today's Move to New, Temporary, Longer-Term Alberta Conference Office

Well, today the move went well. We were packed up and out of the PE Complex at CUC by about 10 AM!! Everyone pitched in and helped each other. The rest of the day was spent cleaning file cabinets, etc., organizing office spaces. It went along nicely. The spaces allotted for offices now seem to be more spacious than originally thought.

Stop by and pay us a visit!

Conference Office Moves to New Office

On Monday, August 29, 2011, the Conference office staff will be moving out of the CUC PE Complex to the new office in Lacombe. Thanks to Alfred Breitkreuz for his hard work in getting the lease hold improvements done in about 6 weeks!!

Those of us who so very much enjoyed the gorgeous view out the large windows on the upper floor, we will miss the peaceful view!!

(October 17, 2010) It has been said that, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men and women do nothing.” On Saturday, October 16, the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church took steps to increase awareness of family violence in their community so that we can help the people of Yellowknife find hope and healing.

Everyone is affected by family violence. Some of us have personally experienced it. Some know someone who has experienced it. Some are the cause, the source of it. It’s everybody’s problem. To get involved, Pastor Brad Dahr invited two community members to come and speak to the church. Rebecca Latour has been working in the field of family violence for 25 years. She has worked with children, young offenders, abused women and families. Currently she is with the Department of Justice working on family violence initiatives which have included family violence legislation and recently a program for men who use violence. Assisting Rebecca, was Hayley Maddeux Young, the family violence consultant with the Department of Health and Social Services. Hayley works closely with the shelters across the territories and Chairs a protocol committee of front line agencies in Yellowknife that respond to family violence.

Rebecca and Hayley began by defining what family violence is. It’s not when someone gets angry or slams a door. It’s not even when there is an argument. Certainly those actions may happen in a family violence situation what we need to be aware of is the systematic use of violence to control, have power over, or manipulate others.

People use violence in many ways to control others: Family Violence isn’t just about hitting; it includes;
• Harming a family member or damaging family property;
• Causing a family member to fear for their safety or the safety of a person in his or her care;
• Sexual abuse;
• Psychologically, emotionally or financially abusing a family member which causes harm or fear of harm.
• Isolating from friends and supports or access to finances;
• Ridiculing, criticizing (no one else would want you);
• Blame family members for the abusers behaviour. (If you weren’t so…… I wouldn’t have to be angry, unfaithful, etc….).

If you think you may be at risk, a key question to ask is, “Am I altering my behaviour because I am afraid of what my partner/spouse/parent will do?” If the answer is yes, you may be experiencing family violence and you should reach out to resources in your community for help.

There are many misconceptions about Family violence. It is often mistakenly referred to in mutual terms: for example “a couple is not getting along” or “they are having a little fight”. This kind of language hides the truth of family violence. This kind of language mutualizes the violence and suggests the victim is as much to blame as the abuser. Sometimes, looking from the outside; in can appear that “it takes two to tango” or that “they are both as bad as each other.” However, when we look closely – there is always a primary aggressor and a victim’s violence is in the context of the primary aggressor’s violence.

Sometimes we explain family violence as a type of explosion that was beyond the control of the angry person. “They couldn’t help themselves”. When we take a closer look we can see that this isn’t true. Family violence is targeted. An individual who is violent to a family member may be, minutes later, respectful and appropriate to their boss or a friend on the phone. Even very violent people act non-violently in most situations. This truth is very hopeful. As people choose to use violence, they can choose to be non-violent.

Rebecca and Hayley also provided solutions for those that have experienced violence, for those that have witnessed it, and those that are using violence. The bottom line is reach out, make the call, get help. The presentation was closed with a garden of prayer asking God for courage to do what it takes to make family violence history within our community.

All Aboard for a High Seas Expedition in Yellowknife

(August 8, 2010) It was intense. It was exhausting. It was the most amazing God-breathed week ever! That’s how the Yellowknife church experienced their presentation of the High Seas Expedition Vacation Bible School that ran daily from July 5 to July 9.

Putting on a VBS is always a fun way to share the Good News about Jesus. As the decorations and backgrounds are set up, a humble gym becomes a large sailboat on the ocean. Simple rooms become prison cells from which Peter was released from and islands where Paul was bit by a snake. What a blessing it is to watch dozens of young people come into this adventure and learn about Jesus. This year was made special by the following highlights:
• The church had the opportunity to share Jesus with over 70 children each day. Almost all of these children were from outside the church.
• Almost two dozen children asked for a Bible to take home.
• Our crew leaders consisted of awesome young people from our church and the community (about 50-50).
• Several older participants asked to be crew leaders next year. It’s exciting to have even more opportunities to share Jesus and to see the community engaging in our mission.

One of the key differences with this year’s VBS is the intentional follow up by the VBS Planning Team and Outreach Team. This follow up will include regular mailouts - offers and invites to upcoming events. Keeping in touch with crew leaders will also be a priority with reunions planned for fall and spring.

“This has been a high day in Zion.” These were the words uttered by our head deacon at the end of the day, Sabbath May 29, 2010. That day was a day of celebration and rejoicing, which marked the end of a two-week crusade at the West Edmonton SDA church.

The crusade began on Friday May 14, 2010, and was conducted by Pastor Andy Manzano, who hails from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Among the topics presented were: “Blueprint for Success,”“How to Walk Straight in a Crooked World,” and “Five Cs For a Happier Home.”

The crusade culminated with Blair Brunner and Yogita Master pledging their troth to each other in holy matrimony during the morning service; and later in the afternoon they joined ten other candidates at a special baptismal service. There was one acceptance into membership on profession of faith.

An exciting, first time event, a Craft Workshop, took place on the weekend of May 7-9, 2010. Jeanie Spratt, a professional artist, with the aid of her biologist husband, Bob, were the inspiring teachers. There were 18 eager ‘learners’ of which 3 were male, and we had the most fun listening to the stories being told as if we were the children, and then actually doing the craft that would go along with the story. All of these crafts and stories are of Jeanie and Bob’s personal design and they were centered around Bible stories or real things from nature. Jeanie gave us such good ideas of how to deal with festive holidays, especially the more controversial ones like Halloween and how to turn it into a Praise to God instead. Although it was a really small group, it really worked best this way. Jeanie had carefully prepared a sample of each craft so that we could know exactly what the finished product should look like. The atmosphere was comfortable and jovial and much fun was had by all, with everyone being excited about a possible follow-up some time in the future.

Jennie & Daniel Straub just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in Calgary, Alberta at the Calgary Central SDA Church. It was celebrated as a family reunion consisting of their son, Don & Juanita Straub (Kelowna, BC), and three daughters Diana & Dan Clarke (Calgary, AB), Carolyn & Dave Good (Chase, BC), and Darlene & Ron Blaney (Rocky Mountain House, AB) along with their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, and brothers. It was definitely a time of celebration with the hopes & plans to celebrate many more years to come!

Grande Prairie Church - First Lay Evangelism Seminar

On May 29th, the Grande Prairie Church celebrated the baptism of two priceless women joining the church for the first time, along with another joining through profession of faith. The mother of two of these women is joining the local church by transferring her membership from an Ontario Adventist Church after not attending church for many years. Truly the Spirit is moving among us as we reflect on the fruits of endeavouring in our first full length evangelism seminar preached by a local church member and elder.

After 4 weeks of dynamic and Spirit filled preaching by our Head Elder, Kip Kurylo, decisions for the Lord began to be made, and baptisms planned. The Grande Prairie Church is encouraged to discover that the pastor or professional evangelist are not the only ones who are called and gifted to preach the gospel and Advent message. It is also confirmed once again that God blesses evangelism done right, and bears fruit either in the short or long term.

In extension of the four new members who have committed to the Lord and His church after attending our evangelism seminar, one of the women’s mother, who came to see her daughter’s baptism, is now attending church regularly; and is presently studying for baptism. This same new member has also led someone to the Lord for the first time since her baptism. God is alive and working through an evangelism-minded church in Grande Prairie. Praise His Name!

Fort McMurray SDA Church Continues to Grow

The Fort McMurray congregation was pleased to welcome into membership through baptism on Sabbath, June 12, 2010, six precious souls.

The event follows another "Revelation of Hope" Prophecy Seminar conducted by Pastor Darrell Beaudoin and prayerfully supported by the entire church family. More baptisms are being planned for the future.

The Fort McMurray church has conducted 11 Prophecy Seminars and a number of Healthy Living workshops since Pastor Beaudoin arrived in August 2006.

Church attendance has steadily increased from around 25 to over 100 since the church began this intensified evangelistic program four years ago. Church members are elated with the membership growth. The general worship atmosphere is contagious as each Sabbath people come to worship in a loving and caring church family environment.

Adventist Farm Family Receives Alberta Century Award

At a presentation June 14, 2010 in Consort, AB. the Sankey family were among others who received plaques recognizing the holding of an original homestead within the family for 100 years.

On April 2, 1910 Dimitrious Sankey filed to homestead on a quarter of land in what is now known as the Hemaruka area in east central Alberta. Of particular significance is that it was within the Palliser Triangle, an area of typically very low moisture in south-eastern Alberta. When significant numbers of settlers abandoned their holdings in the 1930’s due to extreme drought, and local government was not possible, the area came under the jurisdiction of the provincial government and became known as the Special Areas.

Dimitrious and Sophia became Seventh-day Adventist Christians in 1914 and helped establish a church in the area. There has been an Adventist presence (Loyalist Church) in the community ever since.

Despite extreme hardship Dimitrious and Sophia persevered on the land and with hard work raised 8 children and increased their land base. They and their descendants have contributed in their churches and communities locally, provincially, in the United States and in mission service.

That the Sankey family has been in agriculture in the area for 100 years is a testament to that same perseverance and partnership with God shown by previous generations. The land is currently owned by the son, grandson and great grandson of Dimitrious – Steven, Murray & Scott Sankey.

Yellowknife's Amazing Sabbath Race

Get Ready! Get Set! Go!

(June 7, 2010) What do you get when combine the blatant copying of a popular TV show, 40 enthusiastic church members, and a town desperate for the hope of Jesus Christ? Yellowknife’s first ever Amazing Sabbath Race! At 2:00 PM on Sabbath, May 29, 2010, seven teams were given their first clue to an afternoon of fun and community service. The teams completed their five service tasks with big smiles and in the process received many thank yous from the people they helped.

The race went like this: Each team received a clue to a checkpoint somewhere in the city. Once they reached the checkpoint, teams had to complete a task. Once they completed their task they received their next clue and the race continued until the finish line.

“We started out with something really easy,” said Pastor Brad. “At the first checkpoint, teams simply had to take a picture of their whole team featuring the checkpoint area. Then the tasks became more difficult requiring teams to stretch out of their comfort zones.” Over the course of the race, teams had to help a grocery store with facing shelves, clean washrooms at a gas station, sort and fold bags and bags of donated clothes at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, go to a low income housing complex, pick two homes and clean their front window and tidy up their front yard, and give out bottles of water - lots, and lots of bottles of water. At both the housing complex and water bottle giveaway checkpoints, teams had to also leave little calling cards from the church.

Community reaction varied from appreciation to deep gratitude. The gas station manager (an ESSO/Macs store) took pictures and said he would send the story in to their national newsletter. He also told Pastor Brad that if the church ever needed help with a community service event to let him know because they would support it. At the housing complex, residents were very happy for the helping hand. One resident asked if the team cleaning her window could also clean her living room window (a much larger window that was not part of the checkpoint task). The team said yes! She was so happy she called her friends on the telephone and spread the word on what was happening.

At the finish line, on top of a look out known as Pilot’s Monument, teams cheered each other on to finish. The event ended with some treats, sharing of race stories, and the singing of “Side by Side.” As the organizing team reflected on the afternoon, thoughts of next year and Amazing Sabbath Race 2 came to mind...

Baby Dedication for Isaiah

Pastor Tyler is studying for his MDiv at Andrews University, but this was so special, they had to return to Edmonton! "Dare to Move" in Lacombe

“Reaching out the youth of Lacombe” was Pastor Moises’ vision in beginning this project and what better way to do that than to participate in a Dare? The evangelistic series sponsored by the College Heights SDA Church in Lacombe consisted of 9 meetings over 2 weeks focusing on stories from the Bible about people experiencing God. Each night provided a challenge: an opportunity for kids to recommit their lives to the relationship God has been calling them to. Through inspirational worship in music, drama, and story-telling, the evangelistic team dared all who came to move for, listen to, party with, train under, and stop running from the God who loves them.
The reward for attending all meetings was not only a better glimpse of God and the relationship He wants to have with each of His children, but also 20 I-Pod Touches purchased by the College Heights Church in a bold and generous display of support for their young people. It would have been easy had only 20 people came every night, but the lucky few were chosen in a draw from almost 70 names of regular attendees.
As Pastor Moises said in his concluding talk, this is only the beginning! It’s exciting to see God move because stemming from the Dare to Move series are new friendships, ongoing Bible studies, and 14 individuals with an interest in committing their lives to God through baptism. God is still working on the hearts of those who listen in Lacombe and throughout Canada and we ask that you continue to pray for our young people everywhere.

The Warmth of a Cold Water Baptism

It's never too late to join the family of God through baptism. Three of his co-workers, including one brother, responded to the call as the baptism closed that evening.

Drayton Valley Evangelism Meetings Bring Baptism

Horst and Oksana Gisbertz were baptized on April 17, 2010, into the Warburg Church by Pastor John Gilbert, along with a number of rebaptisms. This marked the conclusion of a series of 26 evangelistic meeting held at the Holiday Inn in Drayton Valley. Horst and Oksana are attending the group meetings directed by Derald and Teresa Kisser in Drayton. The group in Drayton number upwards to 20 of God's faithful who are looking forward to being moved from being a group to an organized company. These dear souls are enthusiastic witnesses to God's truth for these end times. Horst is eager to begin preaching the message in his native German language.

Elder Don Corkum presents leadership styles

On the weekend of April 16-18, 2010, over 80 elders from across Alberta met at Foothills Camp for a time of fellowship, spiritual renewal, and training in how to be more effective leaders. Elder Don Corkum, a well-known former president of the Alberta Conference, was the main presenter. His presentations were built around the theme: "Leaders for the End Time." The Alberta Conference has committed to doing annual elders retreats to help encourage and develop competent local lay leadership for our churches.

Saved by the Blood in Yellowknife

(May 29, 2010) There’s power in the blood, so the song goes. How long do you sing about it before you do something about it? On Sabbath, May 29, 2010, the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church celebrated the gift of Jesus’ blood by registering in the One Match Network.

Through building connections in the community, the church became aware of the Yellowknife Fire Department’s participation in the One Match registration drive during the recent EMS week. Pastor Brad Dahr invited Deputy Fire Chief Gerda Groothuizen to present the One Match program to the church and register volunteers. Following the service, many members completed the registration. Ms. Groothuizen expressed sincere gratitude and was especially delighted to see a wide range of ethnic groups volunteering as the network is desperate for Asian donors.

OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network is responsible for finding and matching volunteer donors for patients who require stem cell transplants. Fewer than 30 per cent of patients who need stem cell transplants find a compatible donor within their own families. The rest rely on those who have volunteered to donate stem cells to anyone in need. A variety of diseases and disorders are treated with stem cell transplants including blood-related diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia and inherited immune system and metabolic disorders. OneMatch maintains a database of tissue typing results of all Canadian prospective donors. Whenever a patient requires a stem cell transplant, OneMatch is able to search this database to identify potential matching donors. OneMatch is also a member of an international network of registries, we can also search more than 11 million donors on over 50 registries in other countries. By agreeing to make their donor data available worldwide, international registries have significantly increased the odds of being able to find a matching donor for any patient, anywhere in the world. Baptismal candidates on May 8, 2010

The Calgary Remnant Company and the Pilgrims for Jesus Bible study group embarked on an effort to bring the message of Hope to the families of the Radisson Heights Community in South East Calgary.

Though few in numbers we stepped out in faith. We were faced with many challenges, but thanks to God, the prayer warriors were on guard. We had people praying in Toronto, Grenada, at the Alberta Conference office and also here in Calgary.

The project started with a concert reaching out for Aid to Haiti and Chile’s Earthquake victims. The blessings of the Lord has been numerous throughout this venture. Kevin Smith, a singer from Maryland, Devon Powell, Dalton Francis, Sparkles of the Gospel and other local talents volunteered their services for this concert.

Pastor Joseph Bulgin from the Ruth SDA Church in Ontario delivered the messages of hope. Night after night he delivered compelling messages that pierced hearts and changed lives.

We were also blessed to have the company of Pastor Dreamell Grant, who gave up his vacation to come and help us in the field as a Bible worker.

The tremendous efforts of these two pastors and other volunteers yielded great success for the “Hope for the Family Seminar.” Twenty-one people committed their lives to the Lord. Seventeen baptisms and four members were admitted by profession of faith, with four more
baptisms to follow.

All honor and glory to God for His continued blessings. The Calgary Remnant Company has now grown to fifty-nine members, and the Pilgrims for Jesus gained many interests for Bible
Study.

We had a joyous time throughout this series which was brought to a resounding climax with a splendid display of talents featuring West Edmonton’s own Miguel Brown and other local talents.

Special thanks to Elder Al Graca and Evangelist Fay Mullings for their leadership and hard work as coordinators for the seminars.

Baptism at 10:30 PM

Pastor Julio Morales received a phone call from Estaban Montes de Oca at 8:45 PM on Monday, April 12, requesting baptism. Estaban had been worshiping in the Edmonton Spanish church for the past year and was to leave town at 2:00 AM Tuesday, April 13, to go to Saskatoon, SK, for a month of work.

The Lord had touched his heart and called him to be baptized and Estaban was not hesitant to respond in the most precious way. So... the baptism took place at the Edmonton Spanish church at 10:30 PM! The water was CCCCCOOOOOLLLLLLDDDDD! There were some 20 people witnessing this awesome event. Three of his co-workers and one brother of his responded to the call at the end of the baptism.

A baptism at 10:30 PM was no surprise for Pastor Morales. Last year he had a baptism at 1:30 AM. It too was rewarding.

Praise God for late-night baptisms!

The Smith family is “all quite terrified,” mom Sheila Doran-Smith says.
Sheila, husband Raymond Smith, and kids Dylan and Bethany were frantic on Monday doing last-minute preparations in their endeavour to leave their life behind and start a new one not far from where Henry Morton Stanley once uttered those famous words: “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”

The family is to start anew — for a year or two — on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, in the western wilds of Tanzania.

“I’m going through my suitcases, trying to eliminate another 20 pounds,” Sheila said, trying to pack up her life into two pieces of luggage and a carry-on bag.

The Smiths flew out of Calgary on Monday night.

Their big adventure all came about because Raymond was laid off around Christmas. A master electrician with experience in facilities management, he spent January and February firing out resumés but “had no bites.” Then, their Seventh-day Adventist pastor, originally from South Africa, mentioned in passing that some church hospitals in Africa were seeking administrative help.

“We, being people of faith, told God that if he opened a door, we’d go through it,” said Sheila. “It’s a volunteer position, and we get a house and a car and enough money, presumably, for groceries. That seemed to be the only door open at that point, so we agreed to go through it.”

Sheila is wary but thinks it will be an interesting experience for her family.
“Africa is not on my list of places to go,” she admitted, adding that while some parts of Africa are home to “scary and violent” realities, Tanzania is not so rife with such problems.

She will spend most of her time continuing the home-schooled education of 12-year-old Dylan and 14-year-old Bethany. They hope to volunteer at the hospital and Sheila says her kids ought to have no problem making friends with locals their age.
Raymond, meanwhile, has a world of work ahead of him at the 97-bed Heri Adventist Hospital. The hospital has only one doctor and he has been wasting much of his time on administrative matters. Raymond is set to relieve that load and let the physician get back to caring for his patients.

“I think I’ll be doing pretty near everything, right from the vehicles to the grounds to the maintenance on the buildings,” said Raymond, adding he hopes to work on getting more juice out of the hospital’s electrical generator to help the community.

Sheila and Raymond are leaving a lot behind. Their mothers, both 90, are in Ponoka, and Sheila says they don’t feel good about taking off on them. The same goes for Raymond and Sheila’s grown children living in Edmonton.But they also see certain advantages to the trip.

“We’re trying to teach our kids there’s more to life than video games and TV. That may sound cliché but they seem to be wrapped up in them,” said Raymond. “I think they’ll appreciate what they got.”

Finally he met Shirley, who after getting to know him, invited him to the Sylvan Lake SDA church. After study and prayer, Larry decided to give his heart to the Lord and was baptized.

Dreams Come True in Yellowknife

(March 16, 2010) What are you willing to let God do with your talents, treasure and time? On September 19, 2009, God invited the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church on an adventure to discover how God can use what he gives us to help make dreams come true.

Based on the Kingdom Assignment model, the Dreams Come True series had three assignments. The first assignment was an invitation to accept a talent - $100 - and use it to make dreams come true. In all, ten talents - $1000 - was given out. The second assignment was to ask God to reveal a treasure in our lives that could be sold with all funds going directly to help the poor in Yellowknife. Over $1000 was raised to help the poor. The third assignment asked us to give our time in service to the least of God’s children in or community.

Each person who accepted an assignment was to report back at the Dreams Come True celebration that was held on December 19. Some of the highlights were:

• A family used their talent purchased a bread machine and bread supplies and donated it to the new drop in day shelter so the clients of the shelter would be welcomed with fresh bread in the morning.
• A member used her talent to provide a lunch for about 100 students at a school in the Philippines and then committed to supporting that lunch on a monthly basis.
• A member used her talent to bake spring rolls that another member sold a work raising almost $500 which. The two members then purchased gifts and food for two children who had just lost their mom to suicide.
• Several youth assisted elementary students with their reading program.
• The youth have taken on weekly food basket deliveries in cooperation with a local ministry called Food Rescue.

The impact of the three assignments is still being felt six months since the series later. While some assignments helped with an immediate need, such as a winter coat and boots for a child, others developed long term relationships involving ongoing service and friendship.

The Seventh-day Adventist church has been serving the Yellowknife community for over 30 years and is delighted to be sharing the hope of Jesus Christ with the people of Yellowknife. The church can be found on the web at http://www.yksda.org/.

Bible Study is Popular in Blackfalds

In the spring of 2008, several young people decided that they would try to visibly show their faith in the town of Blackfalds by holding Bible studies in public places. The first of these Bible studies took place at Subway. It became a hit, especially for the Canadian University College dorm students who enjoyed the time away from the dorm and the cafeteria. Because of the popularity of this study, it was decided that it should split, and the hunt for another location began.

After looking around, it was discovered that there was a library located in Blackfalds. With a quick phone call to ask if it would be possible to come and do a Bible study there on Wednesday evenings, the location was decided and the study began the next Wednesday. When entering the library, the atmosphere was very pleasant and welcoming. With joy, these few people were welcomed by the librarians and quickly informed that this library was not like most and there was no need to be very quiet. The group gathered around the fireplace in the comfy chairs and opened their Bibles to study.

Since that joy-filled day, the group has met every Wednesday evening in those same comfy chairs by the fireplace. However, things have changed since that humble beginning. No longer is it just a group of three or four people meeting, but it has grown to be fifteen to twenty people! And amongst these are not only Blackfalds church members and young people from CUC but also community members, one of which has been coming since the spring of 2008! God has blessed greatly through this study in the friendships that have been made with the librarians and community members who attend. We continue to pray for God’s guidance in the library study and with the relationships that are being built through this ministry.

Hall Elected Vice President for Administration

The Alberta Conference Executive Committee has elected Elder Larry Hall to serve as Vice President for Administration/Executive Secretary of the Alberta Conference.

Pastor Hall has served the church in five of the seven conferences across Canada. He came to Christ through studying scripture during his time as a teacher in Labrador. After becoming a member of the Adventist Church his ministry has included work as a literature evangelist, pastor, teacher, chaplain and most recently as the Ministerial Secretary of the Alberta Conference.

Larry has a great love for God and people. He is an avid student of scripture.

Larry is married to Janet who leads our distance learning program in the Alberta Conference.

Fort McMurray Begins 2010 "Healthy Living Club"

The Fort McMurray SDA Church began their 2010 "Healthy Living Club" season with another 'Healthy Choices" workshop with Darlene Blaney. This is the third time Darlene has been to Fort McMurray to run a successful workshop. Approximately 40 church members and guests from the community were in attendance. The presentation and cooking demonstrations were excellent, and the food samples were delicious as always.

A 'Healthy Living Club' workshop is scheduled for every 6 weeks throughout the year, along with our ongoing Prophecy seminars and other community outreach programs being planned. Our next Healthy Choice workshop and Prophecy seminar is scheduled for April 16.

God is richly blessing the Ft McMurray's church. We are almost at capacity attendance of about 100.

Town of Peers Blanketed by the Georges

Peers Company bids farewell to our Bible workers Egbert and Keishauni George on January 30, 2010, and wishes them Gods’ blessings on their new post in Whitecourt.

Egbert and Keishauni were energetic, dedicated Bible workers. As a team they blanketed the town of Peers and surrounding areas with literature, prayed with people in their homes, broke down barriers of ignorance about what Seventh-day Adventist believe, conducted Bible studies, saw one of their contacts baptized, her baby dedicated,and brought life to our little church. With the help of their ministry the church conducted a Kids club; a Five-day Plan to Stop Smoking, a Health Seminar with Darlene Blaney, and now our church has an ongoing commitment to a Seniors Lodge monthly ministry.

Not bad for only nine months of working in the area.

Peers is a small company in a town located about two hours west of Edmonton and forty-five minutes south of Whitecourt. We are always looking for dedicated ministry- minded persons to move to the area and help this small group continue to share the Gospel in this area. The Georges made many contacts for follow up Bible studies so we desperately need more help. Anyone wishing to relocate to a rural area to help in the ministry of a small but active church company will be more than welcome.

Boris Pache was born May 11, 1916 in Sophia, Bulgaria, and died December 19, 2009 in Lacombe, AB. During his career as an Adventist educator Boris taught at Campus Adventiste du Saleve, Collonges, France; Kingsway College, Oshawa, ON; Southwestern Adventist University, Keene, TX; College Adventiste de Kivu, Zaire, Africa; and Canadian University College, Lacombe, AB. Boris was predeceased by his parents, Nikola and Nadejda Pashkulev; his sister, Lyuba Pashkuleva; and his brother-in-law, Konstantin Mihov. He leaves to mourn his family in Sofia, Bulgaria: his sister, Violeta (Pashkuleva) Mihova; his niece, Borislava Mihova; and his nephew, Nikolay Mihov and family.

He has fulfilled their dreams and need for an assistant / youth pastor. He will also be providing pastoral services to the small but growing Remnant Company congregation. At present, Keith is finishing his degree in Religious Studies at Canadian University College and is looking forward to being involved in the ministry of the local church. His wife, Mishka Emanuel Samuels, is currently a teacher at College Heights Christian School in Lacombe. We welcome Pastor and Mrs. Keith Samuels to the pastoral team of the Alberta Conference.

Lighthouse Ministry Sabbath School

October 31, 2009, was a high day for the small group of believers in Grande Prairie who received company status and recognition by the Alberta Conference. Pastor John Adams, Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Director of the Alberta Conference. was present for the occasion and he challenged the group of approximately 20 members to shine for Jesus in the city of Grande Prairie.

Making Sabbath School Biblical, Soul Winning and Relevant once again.

Sabbath School in the North American Division is in trouble, if not dying. The general consensus by leaders and members alike in many of our churches is that Sabbath School is not relevant to most people today; it is out dated, predictable, and serves minimal purpose in today’s society.

It is with this in mind that the North American Division organized a division-wide Sabbath School Workshop for leaders and other invited guests. In the spring of 2009, over 600 people responded to learn how to improve Sabbath School in their conferences and churches. We were not disappointed--by the conclusion of the one-day workshop, just about everyone was excited and pleased with what we had heard. Mr & Mrs Chris Blake, the key presenters, talked about making SS relevant, soul winning and biblical once again. Showing that early Adventists saw SS as the main vehicle to train and evangelize church members and the key service of the day.

Upon returning to the Alberta Conference, I have endeavored to train as many churches as possible.

The Lighthouse Company, a daughter of the Grand Prairie Church under the leadership of Pastor Shawn Brummund is the only group that has put this training into practice so far; here is their story.

The Lighthouse Story

The first Sabbath of October, Pastor John Adams came up to the Lighthouse Company and presented a new concept of ministry-driven Sabbath School. It was a totally new concept for all of us. We had been having wonderful music and a lively lesson study as our Sabbath School, but felt we would like to be more active as a church group in ministry. We had no idea how to start or what to do. With the presentation, it lit the fire of enthusiasm in the leaders and planning started.

All of the leaders of the Sabbath School wanted to be involved with this, so it was difficult to have two Sabbath School classes. We started having the new one in another room and found many people didn’t really attend, and some of the leaders felt they had to stay back in the traditional Sabbath School. At a business meeting in November, it was discussed, and we decided to try it in the main Sabbath School until the end of March, 2010, to give it a fair trial. At that time, anyone wanting a traditional Sabbath School would be able to join together for that purpose.

We outlined the five components we would have: prayer ministry, money ministry, time ministry, social ministry, and Bible study ministry. The first month we tried to get different people to lead out for just one time in the different areas to see if they would like it. Volunteers were a little scarce, so we drafted a few people, and then others volunteered. In the end, we have four people who will do the prayer ministry part, which takes almost half of the Sabbath School time. Our treasurer leads out in time ministry and money ministry and reports on social ministry.

We had three regular teachers for the lesson. One was uncomfortable being a part of the ministry based Sabbath School, but three new people have agreed to begin teaching the lesson part of the Sabbath School. Because of the ministries in the Sabbath School, we don’t have as much time for the lesson. Each teacher, as they are studying, finds one or two points that really speak to them and develop the study around those points. It didn’t seem so overwhelming, so more people are willing to try it.

The first Sabbath, everyone, except the two leaders, were afraid to say or do anything. We started out with our prayer ministry, and soon it became one of the most exciting parts of the Sabbath School. We have only seven prayer requests per Sabbath. We write them on the board with who brought them forward and then ask for a volunteer to pray for that request. It seems to put us in touch with each other and our lives. We have a lot of requests for illnesses, and find out how God has answered the prayers. Many times we find the people recuperate so much faster than anticipated. One member asked for prayer for a previous boss, who just that Thursday learned he had terminal cancer. The next week we asked how he was doing, and the Lord had laid him to rest that Tuesday morning without suffering. We never know how the Lord will answer prayers. We have a book where we write down all prayer requests, who brought them forward, and who prayed for them. One of the prayer requests came from our children. They would like 100 children to come to their Sabbath School. The Lord’s hand is not short, so it is on our prayer list.

The money ministry part has been so exciting. We set up a Sabbath School Project offering. When we take the Sabbath School offering, we have two plates passed around, each one labeled. We ask if anyone knows of any needs. Many times when needs are brought forward, we need more information about the specific needs and how we can help, so a decision is not made instantly. We had a need brought of a dad, who wanted to take his three children to see their grandparents for Christmas but didn’t have fuel money. We voted to give him $200. The member that knew him met him at a local restaurant, took him an envelope with the check in it, and wished him "Merry Christmas," no strings attached. We had one of our members who had to have a malignant tumour removed on his kidney and was struggling financially. At a hospital visit, one of our leaders met a friend of his who told us part of the story we didn’t know. She gave our leader $150 to put with the class’s help for this family. The class voted to give another $350 to help him out, with the idea that if he needs more it will be brought forward.

A young couple in our city is struggling, as the father has cancer and had to have surgery on January 5, 2010. The mother is also struggling with an illness. We decided we would like to help. The people who knew them said they would get more information. As it turned out, their place of employment decided to help them as well by raising over $1200 to get them through Christmas and January. They will keep us informed if they need our help in February.

A family lost their entire house, including all their shoes, in a house fire Christmas morning. Grandparents were visiting and their daughter and child were there as well, but no one was hurt. We have sent out a scout to find out what the immediate need is, as we want to help. Insurance helps, but often the money doesn’t come for a long time.

A young man, one of our members knows and who comes to Sabbath School occasionally, was sleeping on the floor because he had no bed. The young member had a queen bed he could donate, but no bedding. The Sabbath School voted to spend $120 on sheets and mattress pad. Someone had two new pillows to donate; someone else had a comforter; and we were ready to go. Just as we were getting ready to delivery, a friend of his bought him a new bed and brought it over to him. So we have a bed and no need for it. A lady had to quickly leave her home and was sleeping on the floor as were her children. The bed was delivered to her. She had bedding, so we still have the money, which will be used elsewhere as the need arises.

A member of our company is in nursing school and was cut back to four working hours a week so she is unable to pay her rent. We will decide this week how we want to help her. The need is brought forward and we vote on how much to spend and when. People pledge to put in the money and it comes in. We are a small group of about 20 regular members, and we have close to $500 in our projects account, and more comes in weekly. Our other offerings are not suffering at all. The Lord blesses us so much.

Time ministry doesn’t seem to happen as often. The member with the kidney operation has someone check on his driveway every time it snows to make sure it is shoveled. We went out one evening and gathered seven large bins of food for the Salvation Army Food Bank. One Sabbath afternoon we went caroling to some people who were shut in and some senior lodges. They were all so happy to see us. On Sunday, we are gathering together to frame in the basement of one of our members. His home is used to minister to so many people, and we would like to help him make it more useable. When we hear of a need, we make a plan, but often we find the need fulfilled in other ways, so we wait.

We try to turn many activities into part of the social ministry of the Sabbath School; eating together often; and playing together as well. We had Saturday night at the gym in December. One of our members owns a fitness gym; and we all met there on Saturday night to play on the equipment and get some exercise. It was wonderful. We have fellowship dinner every Sabbath so we get to know each other on a regular basis. We are becoming better at keeping our ears to the ground to listen for needs we can fill.

One of the biggest blessings is how it has brought us together as a team working for the Lord. Each one of us has also become more tuned in to the community around us, listening for needs as we interact with other people. Our focus is not on ourselves, but on who we can help. Being a new group we didn’t have much complaining anyway, but with our focus on others, we have so much more joy and encouragement to share with each other. We have people coming that are not members of the church, and they are our most active missionaries. We had a visitor from Ontario last Sabbath that was so impressed. “This is what Sabbath School is all about.” He is going home to start one in his church.

The Lord has truly blessed us much more than we feel we bless others. We want to be used by Him. We want to be His skin in Grande Prairie to touch people’s lives. There is no greater joy.

The Sabbath School Department of the Alberta Conference is presently negotiating with Chris and Yolanda Blake to conduct a workshop here in Alberta this fall about “Ministry-Driven Sabbath School”

In spring of this year we are hoping to conduct a workshop on “Children’s Ministries,” on how to enhance our children's Sabbath School through arts & crafts, music, and Biblical drama by bringing Bible stories alive and interesting.

Rebellion Started in Yellowknife

(December 22, 2009) The multi-purpose space in the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church filled up with rebels on Friday, September 11. Ranging in ages from toddler to well-seasoned adult these rebels had one thing in common; they were tired of the status quo; they wanted to rebel against the things that were keeping them from a closer relationship with Jesus. The next two days would inspire, empower, and unite them.

The Be a Rebel event was an evangelism weekend designed with youth in mind. Featuring guest speaker Moises Ruiz and his wife Katelyn, the weekend included messages that challenged those in attendance to accept God’s invitation to a deeper relationship. However, the goal was to also put the message into practice. On Sabbath afternoon the participants gave out batteries to local residents encouraging recipients to test and/or change their smoke detector batteries. Almost 200 batteries where given out. The event concluded on Sunday afternoon with a rousing game of Garritt Ball - a locally developed multi-team game - and a BBQ. Overall, attendance was consistently in the range of 25-40 people and six pre-church members attended the entire event. This evangelism weekend was made possible through the an Alberta conference evangelism grant and the generous support of the local church members.

Derek Richter Apointed Conference Youth Director

Derek Richter has accepted the invitation of the Alberta Conference Executive Committee to serve as Youth Director of the Alberta Conference. He fills the position which became vacant when Richard Williams became Youth and Education leader of the Maritimes Conference. In searching for a new youth director, conference administration considered many excellent candidates from Alberta and the rest of Canada according to Mark Johnson, Conference President.

Richter has been Chaplain for Fraser Valley Adventist Academy in British Columbia for several years, followed by a brief stint on the pastoral staff of the Aldergrove Church in BC. He is a graduate of CUC who spent his summers on the staff at Foothills Camp.

Derek and his wife, Rena, will join the Alberta Conference leadership group in early 2010.

"We are delighted that Derek and Rena will be joining us to provide leadership in our ministry to the youth and young adults of the Alberta Conference", says Johnson. "I am confident that through this ministry, Derek will be an important influence for good in the lives of our youngest church members."

Sabbath December 19, 2009 was a high day at Peers SDA Company. This Sabbath little Rihanna Myrick, age nine months was dedicated to the Lord.

Her mother Renette, had Bible studies with our Bible workers Egbert and Keishauni George and she submitted her life to Christ (she was baptized later that day) and wanted her daughter Rihanna to grow up loving Jesus as her Lord. A solemn commitment was made by Renette and the church to guide little Rihanna in her knowledge of God.

The church family at Peers SDA Company had a day of rejoicing on December 19,2009. Renette Kreft was baptized into the fellowship of Christ and welcomed into the church family.

Renettes’ testimony was so touching as she told of her search for the true church. When Bible workers Egbert and Keishauni George met her as they canvassed the neighborhood, little did she know then that her quest for truth was to be answered. God put our Bible workers in the right place at the right time just for Renette. Renette was a hungry learner of the Scriptures. She completed all the Amazing Facts lessons with the Bible workers, read several books, did research on Seventh-day Adventist, watched Professor Veith Total Onslaught DVDs and was convicted by the Holy Spirit that now she had found what she was searching for. Renette was only contacted in late summer, but her thirst for truth was her driving force to learn all she could. Renette quickly became a part of the church family. She attended church services, prayer meetings, and helped in our community outreach. It is also a tribute to the diligence of Egbert and Keishauni George, our Bible workers, who guided her through her entire studies, answered her questions with Scriptures, and gave her the freedom to decide for herself to follow Jesus all the way.

Renette had her daughter dedicated earlier in the church service and celebrated her first communion service all on this day.

Renette will be moving back to Lethbridge before the end of the year but already she said the members there welcomed her when she made a visit to that church a few weeks ago. Peers Company is indeed blessed to have Renette with us even though it is for a short while, and now the Lethbridge Church will have the joy of nurturing her.

November 11 is always a day to remember! However, for Jim Hunt and Karlee McNalley it will be remembered for another important reason. On that day in 2009 they were married in the presence of many of their family and friends. Jim's parents were able to attend from Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, and Karlee's mother from Australia. It was a simple but beautiful service followed by a delightful reception at the Meadowlands Gof Course where Mr. Ed Reimche, long time friend of the Hunt family, was Master of Ceremonies.

To add even more to their joy was the baptism on Sabbath, November 14, when Karlee joined the Sylvan Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church. A fellowship dinner was provided to allow the church family to welcome Karlee and become better acquainted with the family visiting from far away.

The Sylvan Lake church family was honoured to be invited to a surprise 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration for Dr. David and Ida Warner on November 14, 2009. This celebration was initiated by their children, several of whom gave tributes of gratitude for the wonderful example their parents have given us all. A light lunch was enjoyed as several shared their memories and expressed appreciation fo the Warner family who have been members of the Sylvan Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church for many years.

The whole family was present except for five members. There are 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

On November 21, 2009, the Stettler Seventh-day Adventist Church had a wonderful celebration for the beautifully renovated church building. There were visitors from all across the province, many of whom at one time were members. The sanctuary was filled as we worshipped together. The theme for the day was "To Remember, To Be Renewed, and To Be Revived."

Pastor Warren Kay challenged the congregation to be renewed and revived by having Jesus come into their life and allow Him to bring His gift of abundant life. Elder Bill Olson, retired President of the Alberta Conference, spoke at the rededication service in the afternoon. Elder Bill Wigley reminded us of the pioneers who by their careful stewardship made the whole renovation possible. Evie Van Shiek led the congregation in the worship hymns. Special music was provided by Tamara McPherson, Leo Ganson, and others.

Special recognition was given to Harold Holdal for his generous donation of time and energy to oversee the renovation project. Without his help our dream would never have become a reality. His wife Violet was also recognized for loaning us her husband so the project could be completed.

November 20 to 22, 2009, Darlene Blaney conducted a weekend Health Seminar. Darlene as always provided so much wonderful information on how to improve our health and, of course, the food was fantastic. We were happy members from our sister church in Whitecourt were able to join us on Sabbath. We had eight people attend from the community. One of the ladies who attended from another church in the area and was so blessed by the seminar she expressed the desire to have Darlene do a seminar at her church for their ladies group. This is a major breakthrough for our church in this community.

With no stopping for a break the church was back at the nursing home on November 28 for another ministry outreach.

Craft Time at Kid's Club

The month of October 2009 Peers Company conducted a Kid Club for children in the community. The first four Sabbath afternoons in October had the members putting on skits, crafts, and Bible story plays for the children. We had six children attend from the community who expressed the wish for us to do it again next year. It was a fun time and a lot of hard work getting each program together but it really helped to showcase the church in the community. A special thanks to our Bible workers Egbert and Keishauni George for masterminding the plays and creating fantastic props. The members acted in the plays so well! We were all surprised at the talent we have in our midst. The theme of the program was "Kids Under Construction" and each play focused on issues children face each day such as bulling and lack of self esteem.

The last Sabbath in October saw the Peers group ministering at a seniors lodge in Evansburg. This is now a monthly ministry for our church. The group puts on a musical program and short sermonette followed up by visiting with the residents.

We even had a very special couple from Sherwood Park church visiting us in October and presented our church with some much appreciated DVDs and books for our library. They wish to remain anonymous so no names will be given but a big thank you to them anyway.

Painting Murals

From ME to We - Friendship Week
This was a week-long activity where older classes had a younger “buddy” classroom. Each day allowed students to participate in a special activity together:
• Monday started off with a short assembly lead out by Pastor Steve.
• Tuesday included eating, playing together and painting some fabulous murals.
• Wednesday the students enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast prepared by the teachers and some Grade 9 students. Mr. Gabrys lead out in worship along with very enthusiastic students.
• Thursday was PJ Day and each class planned and delivered a surprise for another class.
• Friday was Colour Day. The buddy classes wore the same colour and enjoyed each other’s company as they made a book together.
These opportunities to share together allowed students to continue to grow in the motto of “ME to WE.” Thanks to the staff and students for their flexibility and great spirit!

Drumheller Dinosaur Trip
Grades 3-6 travelled to the Royal Tyrrell Museum on Oct.15. They had a tour of the museum and enjoyed a special 1 hour class where students had the opportunity to dig for real fossils using real paleontology tools.

Volleyball Fever
CHCS just completed their Wolf Creek Volleyball League season and are looking forward to the Alberta FCA Youth Rally and Volleyball Tournament on Nov. 20-22. The theme of the weekend is "Beyond the Court". CHCS will host the Volleyball Tournament on Saturday evening and Sunday. All Adventist schools in Central Alberta are invited and 105 students are expected to participate during the weekend.
In the Wolf Creek League the boys’ team won 4 out of 7 matches. The girls’ team made valiant efforts and maintained a positive attitude and team spirit even though they did not win any matches. They were also exceptional at rehearsing their cheers!

Environmental Science Fair
On Thursday, November 5, Grade 8 and 9 students displayed their posters and experiments on a variety of topics for parents and friends to view and discuss. Visitors could also complete the experiments that students had at their table. All of the poster presentations explored topics about some aspect of the environment.

ECS Thanksgiving Dinner & Program Mrs. Schafer had her ECS class busy in October preparing for the annual Thanksgiving program and meal on October 15. The children made pumpkin pies in the morning and had a great program of Native songs, dances, poetry and drama prepared for their friends and family to enjoy that evening. They had an awesome time! Thanks to Shirley Schafer for providing the pie dough for the pies, buns and whipped cream for the supper.

ECS Seed Lunch
The ECS class has been learning all about seeds and to culminate the unit, they made a very yummy “Seed Lunch”. The whole meal was made up of foods that are made from seeds, contain edible seeds, or were seeds themselves. Some of the foods they had included: whole grain bread, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, grapes, beans, popcorn, nuts, strawberry jam and pea butter. They invited and were honoured to have Mr. Nielsen (principal) join them for their special meal.

Model Teaching Week
Although most CHCS students had a break from school during the week of November 9-13, some students, along with students from other schools, participated in a Model Teaching Week. This event was held at CHCS and hosted by the Alberta Conference. Seventy-two teachers from Alberta, Manitoba-Saskatchewan and Quebec participated in an intensive and often captivating week in an actual classroom setting demonstrating the elements of Highly Effective Teaching (HET). The week was clearly structured to provide learning for both students and teachers. Three model teaching classrooms (lower elementary, middle grades and Jr. High) were each taught by a seasoned HET teacher. The students became a critical component in the learning process and experienced a fully-functional week of integrated conceptual curriculum. Teachers alternated between observing in a classroom and attending sessions to expand their knowledge of HET. Our teachers appreciated the daily opportunities to discuss classroom procedures and teaching techniques with HET teaching associates. On Wednesday, all classes went on a "Being There Experience". This was a field trip which integrated the classroom theme and curriculum content. This allowed students to learn through real-life experiences. Each class visited one business which included a local dairy farm, Sobeys, and The Good Water Company. A profitable week was had by all and the teachers are excited about trying the new strategies in their classrooms.

CUC - Serve Lacombe Day 2009

With rakes, hoes, and paintbrushes, with smiles and sweat, more than 210 Canadian University College students, staff, and faculty devoted the afternoon of September 23, 2009, to community service. On one of the hottest days of the season, teams pruned and weeded at the Lacombe Hospital, sang at Heartland Manor, wielded paint brushes at the Clive Neighborhood Place, cleaned windows at the Lacombe Daycare, interacted with students in local schools, upgraded trails along Lake Elizabeth—and participated in a dozen other projects.

Student Fae Armitstead comments, “It was a nice change of pace to spend a day working together.” Cari Astleford agrees: “ Not only did we get to have fun working with friends, we also spent time helping others.” Melissa Huether adds, “Helping clear a trail at J.J. Collette was a great experience. My husband and I use the trails there all the time—I can’t wait to go for a hike on the trail we helped make!” Education major Daphne Bell comments, “Service Day allowed me to interact with students in the schools and gave me good experience for my future career.”

Not only did the CUC family enjoy Serve Lacombe day; people in the community were grateful for the assistance they received. One woman expressed her thanks for the “conscientious, hard working, happy” students who helped paint her patio; another commented on the “wonderful hard working” group who did “amazing work” in Clive.

On September 23, the spirit of serving and sharing invigorated the community and the Hilltop.

Lacombe Food Drive, October 2009

Bright orange paper notes had been stuck on fresh PC plastic shopping bags reminding Lacombe occupants to put their food donations in the bag for the annual Lacombe Food Bank Drive on October 31. They were asked to leave the bags outside on their doorstep for pick-up. The College Heights SDA Church Earliteens, Junior Sabbath School members, with help from the Parkland Pathfinder club, are to be thanked for this big job. The bags were distributed around the neighbourhoods by CHCS students in Grades 3-9, PAA Religious Studies 35 class, and young people from the Lacombe Bethel Christian Reform Church.

Sabbath afternoon was a fulfilling time for those helping in the job of collecting the bags. Thanks goes to the many, both young and old, who came out to help and to those who drove cars, vans, and trucks to put the heavy bags in. After unloading the goods from the vehicles at the Lacombe Food Bank, the workers were treated to Pizza which local shops and businessmen had donated for the occasion. The Lacombe community is to be thanked for its generosity.

At the Lacombe Food Bank, willing hands took the bags in and filled the store room and part of the stockroom with the goods. A rough count of the bags brought in came to 1,260, but more will come in as not all bags were left on the outside doorsteps. At the time of this writing an estimated 13,000 lbs. of food were collected.

The food donated will be sorted and put on shelves. What there is not room for on the shelves now will be stored in crates and boxes and will be shelved as needed. The local stores give weekly contributions and the food collected in this annual drive will help swell the stock of food for distribution. It is shared with those who come to the bank needing help and is very much appreciated.

Parkview Adventist Academy Supports Camp Whitesand Project

When the message came from Saskatchewan that help was needed for Camp Whitesand, 17 super-talented dismantling specialists from Parkview Adventist Academy responded to the call and left early one Sunday morning. These demolition experts worked for three days ripping siding off countless cabins. It was Alex Raney's delicious meals that kept this troop going. Everyone raved about the great food. Someone obviously knew how to keep a bunch of teenagers happy!

Hundreds of square feet of TyVek were placed on the cabin walls as well as new soffits. However, the removal of the siding seemed to be the most fun. It also supplied the team with great material for one BIG bonfire. They had to pick a time when it wasn't too windy to light the giant pile of old scraps and wood. What fun everyone had around the bonfire, telling stories and roasting marshmallows! All in all, it was a great three-day experience for these volunteers. It was another example of PAA students being "willing to serve." This is the theme for PAA for the next few years. So far this year, students have cleaned up the shorelines of Gull Lake and beautified Camp Whitesand.

On the way home from this excursion, one of the students thoughtfully said, "Funny how hard work makes you feel so good, even when you don't get paid." The youth enrolled at PAA are truly learning what service is all about.

College Heights Church 100th Anniversary

Remember. Rejoice. Renew. Those are the words emblazoned on the logo created for the 100th anniversary of the College Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church. And during the weekend of October 16 and 17, 2009, that’s what the church family did.

The Friday evening Vespers Service, planned by Ron Sydenham, featured video testimonies from students and audience participation about the past and present. Led by Joy Fehr, the congregation realized that the spirit of commitment and service which characterized the pioneers still animates the church today. Centennial calendars,created by Brian Leavitt and Edith Fitch, and designed by Jr Ferrer, were distributed after the program. An enthusiastic Afterglow, led by Campus Ministries, completed the evening.

Sabbath was packed with activities. Don Corkum, pastor from 1982 to 1984, shared his beliefs on “An Enduring Faith” in the first worship service; Steve Little, chaplain from 1994 to 1999, spoke about “The Case of the Missing Legs” in the second service. The PAA/CUC Choral Union and the musical group “Rise Above” added to the joy of the day. At each worship service, the congregation participated in an act of renewal: they remembered the past, rejoiced in the present and pledged that “On this centennial Sabbath, we, the people of this church and congregation, consecrate ourselves anew to the cause and service of God.” Belinda Bader and the Worship Committee planned the church services.

During Sabbath School, a play, written by Denise Herr, reviewed the founding of the church, the building of the present sanctuary, and the involvement of the congregation in service. Frank Hippach (Keith Clouten) and Lawrence Morgenson (Larry Herr) revisited some of the challenges of choosing the first slate of church officers; Kelvin Hill, Lew Fleck, Arvin McCarty, and Reuben Lorenson harmonized as they urged the congregation to “Come, let us build on the Hilltop”; Ken Kendall, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Lacombe, spoke about how the work of the church has touched the community; and children from the Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior Divisions reminded us that “the church is not a building…the church is the people!”

A potluck at the CUC Physical Education Complex, planned by Edith Fitch and her committee, proved to be a feast for the eyes (Marj Dubuc’s creative centerpieces and Cleo Foreman’s white aprons for the servers), for the body (Shepherd’s pie, salads, and a plethora of pies), and for the soul (time to reconnect with friends and to talk about how God has led us).

Some people lingered over the meal, while others left to participate on the history walk, beginning at one of the first hilltop meeting places—the Chapel. There people remembered what the building looked like and enjoyed a play, “Tonsillectomy Days,” presented by the Parkland Pathfinders. The next stop was the John McKibbin Education Centre, formerly the auditorium. Herb Kennedy recalled what it was like to play and worship in the same building. In the church, Wilford Tetz shared memories and pictures of building the sanctuary. Afterwards, many people participated in an “organ crawl” led by Wendy Markosky and Cari Astleford.

The Evensong program, “Ten Decades of Music,” was planned by Brian Leavitt. In 80 minutes, the congregation reviewed the history of the hilltop church and schools through the medium of music. Alma Reimche reenacted the contributions of Mrs. O.W. Reinmuth, CJC piano teacher; the Men of Faith recalled the College Heights Heritage Plays with their “Smoking and Chewing Song”; Phillip Jeffrey’s solo made many people think of Bill McQuary’s moving rendition of “Were You There?”; the Heritage Singers revisited brought a blessing; Reuben Lorenson’s portrayal of Eric B. Hare brought back fond memories; and Gem Fitch’s Centennial Hymn, “Praise to Thee, O Great Jehovah,” inspired members of the congregation to renew their vision and to “face the future, rich in hope, through endless years.”

The celebration continued into the evening with an Old Fashioned Saturday Night Social, planned by Keith Clouten and his committee. A light supper and birthday cake were followed by a number of games featuring balloons, buckets, and umbrellas. The evening—and the centennial celebration—concluded with a Grand March.
May the spirit of remembering, renewing, and rejoicing be ever in our hearts.

Model Teaching Week

During the week of November 16, 2009, teachers from the Alberta Seventh-day Adventist education system learned best teaching practices by observing three guest master teachers (one from South Carolina and two from Oklahoma) in a Model Teaching Week at College Heights Christian School in Lacombe. Most students enjoyed some time away from school that week; however, about 50 students from various schools were a part of the mock model school. Isaac Zayachkowski, Superintendent of Adventist Schools in Alberta, says they launched their "Journey to Excellence" six years ago and, thanks to funding from the Provincial Government, their focus now is improving student success. Not only teachers from Alberta, but Manitoba, and Quebec took part in learning best teaching practices so each teacher and student can find a safe learning environment to flourish in. The first order of business was designing their model classrooms. They currently have a focus in three main areas.

Ponoka Church Praises God for Baptism

On November 7th the Ponoka Church celebrated 2 baptisms. Joshua Beaudoin was baptized after two years of preparation and made his decision to follow in the footsteps of Jesus through the waters of baptism. Darryl Johnson, who first attended the 2008 prophecy seminar was also baptized into the body of Christ, and his immediate family were there to witness the grand event. Before the baptisms service the Ponoka church members promised and voted to support these two young men with all their emotional and spiritual resources to help them grow in the Lord. We praise the Lord and rejoice with the angels in heaven for the commitment of these two individuals.

October marks the first anniversary of the Lacombe Vegetarian Dinner Club. Hosted by the Lacombe Community Church, the club meets every month for a delicious vegetarian dinner. Average attendance is 45, half of whom are not church members. Recipes for every dish are provided, as well as other health materials. Each evening following the meal there is a short lecture by a health educator, or an inspiring musical program. At each meeting a variety of door prizes are given out, many of which are cookbooks.
Coordinator Ruth Riffin is pleased with the response to this outreach. She says: "Our church members are inviting their friends and neighbours and, as a result, we are getting to know more of our community folks. Our visitors, in turn, are inviting their friends. Many of those attending have stated that they have made changes in their lifestyles because of what they learned at our club dinners."
Attendees are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about vegetarianism and a variety of health topics. They have told the team that they are surprised that vegetarian and vegan dishes are so tasty. They are eager for the next Dinner Club, and love to learn about healthy living.

The Caribbean Association of Adventists in Alberta (CAAA) recently celebrated a momentous occasion! September 4-7, 2009 marked the 30th anniversary of the founding of CAAA, a non-profit organization, with a mission of preserving and sharing cultural heritage while leading souls to Christ.
Pastor Clive Dottin, the Youth, Health, & Religious Liberty director of the Caribbean Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists was the keynote speaker, and an excellent addition to the weekend activities. His sermons included such topics as “Getting past the first page,” which addressed milestones (self inflicted or otherwise) that stifle the growth of meaningful relationships with Christ, and how to overcome them. We praise God that Melissa Adams, a first time visitor to CAAA, was convicted by the Holy Spirit, and was baptized on Sabbath, September 5 along with Cassandra John who was re-baptized. Many others made vows re-dedicating their lives to Christ. We were also honored to have Mark Johnson, the president of the Alberta Conference, bring opening remarks.
The family retreat (themed “Good News!”) at Foothills Camp, Bowden included thought provoking sermons from the featured speaker, therapeutic massages, a financial seminar, an old time social, a banquet, and delicious vegetarian meals. The banquet capitalized on Caribbean folklore and the many talents of young and old, while the social featured a mixture of traditional and well known games proving to be enjoyable for all age groups. This power-packed weekend proved to be a unique spiritual experience.

Yellowknife Fire Department Gives Thanks for Adventist Church

In the next few days the Yellowknife Church will be posting a report on its recent Be a Rebel evangelism weekend but here’s an exciting news flash. Each week the city publishes a newsletter called, “Capital Update” and they mail it to every mailbox in town. This week, the fire department printed this short announcement:

“THANK YOU! Seventh Day Adventist Church
“The Seventh Day Adventist young people stepped up to the plate September 12 and 13 with the “Be a Rebel Community Challenge.” Spearheaded by Pastor Brad Dahr, they delivered 200 batteries to homes in the Forrest Drive area with the message “Stay Safe! Change smoke detector batteries once a year and test them regularly.” Our sincere thanks from the YKFD for helping our community practice fire safety! Job well done!”

The members of the Yellowknife church know that people don’t care what you know until they know you care. This community service event sent the message that we care about our community and it’s great to get some good press for it. However, credit really goes to Moises and Katelyn Ruiz who were the guest speakers for the weekend event. “When Moises, Katelyn and I were brainstorming for the weekend, it was Moises’ idea to give out batteries,” says Pastor Brad. “We were going to do them as a lead into the weekend but they didn’t arrive in time (our time) so we made giving them out part of the evangelism weekend (that’s God’s timing).” Also, big applause and pats on the back go to the church members who went out in large groups to give away the batteries. “Coming together as a team made the battery event and the whole weekend a huge success,” said Pastor Brad.

Fred SanJenko Obituary

Fred SanJenko was born March 1, 1917, in Wood Mountain, Saskatchewan and died October 21, 2009, at the age of 92 in Vegreville, Alberta.

Fred served the church faithfully in Calgary and Vegreville as a deacon and 14 years as the Investment Leader in Vegreville, Alberta.

He is lovingly remembered by his three daughters: Grace SanJenko of Edmonton, AB; Darlene Rastegar of Vegreville, AB; and Jane (Dr. Lee) Farrow of Vegreville, AB; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; parents Andrew and Vera; sisters Nettie Wolfe, Alyce Hall, Jean Poirier; brothers Bill, Steve, John, Mike, Alec, Kelly, and Edward; and many other friends who will miss hearing his stories of answered prayers.

Great Service is a Choice

On a mild, late September afternoon I travelled out to the Cavalcade campsite across from Abraham Lake (511.2 kilometers round trip). Forty grade 9 students and their counselors from our SDA schools had been camping there since Monday. What a lovely setting the teachers and kids had to enjoy. There were majestic mountains that outlined the skyline across the valley. And as the sun was setting you could see the features of an Indian's face and headdress silhouetted against the southern sky.

Once the campfire was lit and all the campers had gathered on their benches and picnic tables Shad Lehmann had a few announcements before worship. I used the theme of...."In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy paths." I tried to tie this into what God might have in mind for you as your life work. In other words stay in touch with Him, trust Him, and you will be amazed at how He will lead in your life. Then it was time for some "giveaways". There were choices of PAA shirts, pens with lights in one end, caps, and camouflage Bibles. How interesting to see the Bibles become the first choice.

Then to top the evening off my wife Karen had the hot chocolate container all set up. There were seven dozen donuts of every variety (apple fritters went first) all spread out on a picnic table and a hundred of the Okanagan's finest crisp apples. So what made the evening so rewarding? It was to be thanked and hugged by countless kids you didn't even know. It was to serve without expecting anything (other then new students next year) and yet be rewarded by thankfulness. As we serve together in God's family, our lives take on eternal importance. Paul said, "I want you to think about how all this makes you more significant, not less . . . because of what you are a part of" (1 Corinthians 12:14a, 19 MSG).

God wants to use us to make a difference in this world. He wants to work through us. What matters is not the duration of your life, but the donation of it. Not how long you lived, but how you lived. Let me illustrate the theme of our school year, "to serve" in another way by the following story:

No one can make you serve customers well. That's because great service is a choice. Years ago, my friend, Harold Justinen, told me a wonderful story about a cab driver that proved this point. He was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing Harold noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for Harvey. He handed my friend a laminated card and said:

"I'm Wally, your driver. While I'm loading your bags in the trunk, I'd like you to read my mission statement."

Taken aback, Harold read the card. It said:

Wally's Mission Statement:

"To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest, and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment"

This blew Harold away. Especially when he noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Wally said, "Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf."

My friend said jokingly, "No, I'd prefer a soft drink."

Wally smiled and said, "No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, water, and orange juice."

Almost stuttering, Harvey said, "I'll take a Diet Coke"

Handing him his drink, Wally said, "If you'd like something to read, I have The Wall Street Journal, Time, Sports Illustrated and USA Today."

As they were pulling away, Wally handed my friend another laminated card. "These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you'd like to listen to the radio."

As if that weren't enough, Wally told Harold that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for him. Then he advised Harold of the best route to his destination for that time of the day. He also let him know that he'd be happy to chat and tell him about some of the sights, or, if Harold preferred, to leave him with his own thoughts.

"Tell me, Wally," my amazed friend asked the driver, "have you always served customers like this?"

Wally smiled into the rear view mirror. "No, not always. In fact, it's only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard the personal growth guru, Wayne Dyer, on the radio one day. He had just written a book called You'll See It When You Believe It. Dyer said that if you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you'll rarely disappoint yourself. He said, 'Stop complaining! Differentiate yourself from your competition. Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.'

"That hit me right between the eyes," said Wally. "Dyer was really talking about me. I was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I did more."

"I take it this has paid off for you," Harold said.

"It sure had," Wally replied. "My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I'll probably quadruple it. You were lucky to get me today. I don't sit at cabstands anymore. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on my answering machine. If I can't pick them up myself, I get a reliable cabbie friend to do it and I take a piece of the action."

Wally was phenomenal. He was running a limo service out of a Yellow Cab. I've probably told that story to more than fifty cab drivers over the years, and only two took the idea and ran with it. Whenever I go to their cities, I give them a call. The rest of the drivers quacked like ducks and told me all the reasons they couldn't do any of what I was suggesting.

Wally the Cab Driver made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like a duck and start soaring like an eagle. How about you?

Each year Class Challenge matches High School and College teams against each other. This year the Parkview Adventist Academy grade 10's didn't win but what a performance this new crop of students put on. Can you imagine students from 14 years old through their mid 20's all jammed into the Canadian University College gym? Not only were they fiercely competitive but they had loads of fun too? Saturday night saw grade 10, 11, 12, University Freshmen, and the rest of the University competing for bragging rights in the tire roll and jelly bean toss. The Faculty and Staff acted as officials during this time of intense playful fun. From Tug of Wars to Human Wheelbarrows it was quite a spectacle to watch. Professor Ron Schafer led out in the many assorted games with his statistician's keeping track of the team scores. For the first time in many years the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year University team won class challenge ------BUT if you look at the faces of the grade 10 Phantom's you can surely tell they had the most fun.

Crocodiles Found in Yellowknife

Crocodiles, fireflies and crawfish, oh my! On June 29, the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church was “swamped” with over 60 fearless kids as the church launched their week long Crocodile Dock VBS. It all began when Children’s Ministry leaders, Sheila and Noel Cruz, led a team of eager volunteers to transform the church’s gym into a Bible Bayou full of swampy things. Then crew leaders were trained and coached. When opening day came, the gym was full of community children ready to become fearless kids shining God’s light.

This year’s VBS was the largest yet with an average of 60 children in attendance each day with few days seeing over 70 children join the fun. The Crocodile Dock theme was evident all over the building from the craft stations (Crawfish Crafts and Missions) to the games (Gator Games). Perhaps the most amazing part of all was the Firefly Finale set where participants could hop on a flat-bottom boat and pretend to drift on lazy, hazy waters under tall cypress trees. Plants such as trees and water-lilies were built from ordinary school materials and garbage bags were used to create “the swamp”.

Each day began at 2pm with the Sing and Play Swamp Stomp which was led by the crew leaders - all early teens. The children who signed up for the camp were arranged into eight different groups or crews. After the Sing and Play Swamp Stomp, the crews split up and headed for the various stations around the church. All the games, crafts, snacks, and stories reinforced the Bible point for that day. A workbook was supplied to each child with instructions to draw or write about 'God in action', such as their parents hugging or laughing. Once the crews had moved through the stations, they rejoined each other for the Firefly Finale.

On the last day, all 10 crew leaders pitched together to perform a skit on 'being fearless' for all of the children and their parents. All the participants where given their crafts and small toys to take home to share with the rest of their family; a constant reminder that, “God is with us! Fear not!”

Sherwood Park Care Center Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Sherwood Park Care Center is a senior care facility owned and operated by Alberta Health, whose purpose is to meet the needs of aging family members and accomplishes their mission by providing quality care for the individuals who reside in this Christian care facility.

On the weekend of September 25-27, 2009, the staff, conference administrators, residents, friends, former employees, and resident family members,gathered in a large white tent right on the property next to the care center! Everyone enjoyed the words of congratulation and appreciation throughout the weekend. It was evident to all how God has led in the direction of this care facility since its inception 40 years ago.

The weekend events also included tours of the facility and grounds, culminating in a BBQ with live entertainment! It was obvious that there was much thought, planning, and efficient administration of the weekend events. It was so appreciated by so many.

Pastor Peter Ford's dream is now becoming a reality! The Alberta Conference administration, assisted by Pastor Ford and Bob Spratt, entered into an agreement to purchase a parcel of land in the town of Hobbema. The intention for this piece of property is to erect a church and safe multi-purpose community center for students of Mamawi Atosketan Native School, future students, and the community.

It is a Native people's custom to show their appreciation to someone who does something for them by presenting a gift as a thank you. Rose Simon, a representative of the Native community in Hobbema as well as a member of the Maskwachees Adventist company, presented a beautifully-decorated cake as shown in the photo above. Jeannie Spratt, wife of Bob Spratt who is actively involved in the ministries we provide in the Hobbema area, made and decorated this cake. As you can see, it is a work of art and beauty! What a fantastic way to say thank you.

What a great year we are experiencing already at PAA. Everyone is saying that our student body is of such tremendous quality. The dorm has been blessed with full rooms and great student leadership. We will see how the academic side of PAA transpires further into the year.

Mrs. Angie Bishop is our new Principal at PAA this year. She comes to us with many years of teaching and administrative experience. She was our vice-principal last year and previous to that taught at CHCS. Taking on the duties of vice-principal this year is Rod Jamieson. His experience here at PAA will be very valuable in helping Angie with the many administrative duties. He will also be teaching exciting hands on classes like; mechanics, welding, woodworking and digital photography.

We have been blessed by two new faculty members. Mr. Jason Irish comes to us from the Fraser Valley with a family of four kids, one of which, Brandon joins our grade 10 class at PAA. Jason will be focusing on Socials Studies and coaching our soccer team. Deanna, Jason's wife will be working as a Health Care aid at the Royal Oak. Mrs. Tracy Ganson is our new Religious Studies teacher. She and her husband Clayton have two young children. Tracy is already getting involved with the kids in some musical ventures and service projects.

In our very first week in Academy many of the students participated in the Sabbath Communion Service at the College Heights Church. That same evening the Student Association had a very successful movie night at CHCS gym. Then straight into the week there were try outs for Volleyball and Soccer. Word is that the ladies volleyball team will be a team to contend with. A number of new students with top volleyball skills are trying out. Mr. Jamieson is already excited about the team's trip to Walla Walla, a sporting high light of the year.

The school has taken on a significant theme this year. It is "Service" within the school and community. If you are going to give your life for something ... What will it be-a career, a sport, a hobby, fame, wealth? None of these will have lasting significance. Students will learn that service is the pathway to real significance. It is through ministry that we discover the meaning of our lives. The Bible says, "Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body" (Romans 12:5 MSG). For example within our Science classes students have volunteered to be part of a shore clean up detail this fall. Mrs Ganson's students are already working on creating a project within the RS classes.

Our focus at PAA is to let God use us to make a difference in this world. He wants to work through us. What matters is not the duration of our lives, but the donation of our lives. Not how long we've lived, but how we lived. As our constituency we seek your prayers and support of Parkview Adventist Academy. We are truly a school that is:

Yellowknife Church Bans Styrofoam Dinnerware

Living in one of the most beautiful parts of Canada has had an impact on the members of the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church. This month they have made a commitment - ‘No More Styrofoam.’ Members Liza and Rony Roy are leading the the church towards a more ‘green’ attitude. “From now on our fellowship meals will be BYOP (Bring Your Own Plates),” Liza said. The church will no longer purchase styrofoam dinnerware and will simply use up whatever is on hand.

“When we get to the last styrofoam plate we will commemorate the moment," says Pastor Brad Dahr, “we were thinking about a second of silence for every year it takes for styrofoam to break down in a landfill but then we could be standing there for a very long time!” For visitors who don’t know about the BYOP rule the church has dinnerware on hand. “Our original Kingdom Assignment from God was to care for the earth and everything in it. Even though the world is in a fallen state and will soon be renewed by the second coming, God’s calling to be good stewards of its resources and environment still stands,” says Pastor Brad Dahr who applauds his members’ initiative in this area. “It’s one thing to talk about what we believe but we need to walk the talk.”

Four College Heights Youth Baptized at Oshkosh Camporee

On August 15, 2009, at the Oshkosh Camporee in Wisconsin, four of the youth from the College Heights Church were baptized at the International Pathfinder Camporee. Rachel Davis, Jordan Southcott, Josh Southcott, and James Southcott all made a public declaration of their faith in Jesus. It was an exciting conclusion to the camporee.

Sherwood Park Care Center Celebrates 40th Anniversary

You are invited to come and celebrate with the residents, staff, and family of the Sherwood Park Care Center on September 24-26, 2009. This long-term care facility has been in operation for 40 years! The weekend will be full of reminiscing beginning on Friday where we will focus on the current residents with a music festival and spiritual service. On Sabbath morning, there will be an old-fashioned church service held in a tent in the courtyard of the Care Center, and in the afternoon there will be a rededication of the Care Center. "To God be the glory, great things He has done." It has been an eventful summer at Edmonton Mill Woods SDA Church. On Women's Ministries Day, June 13, several sisters in our congregation were given tokens of appreciation and commended for their individual contributions. As well, Ralph presented three women from the community - Agnes, Patricia, and Lorna - with certificates for their completion of an eye-opening group Bible study on the book of Romans.

Pastor Ishmael Ali from Calgary Garden Road was guest speaker for Community Guest Day, June 20.

At the end of June, the Youth Ministries Department held a bottle drive fundraiser, and the overwhelming community support enabled our church to present $1000 for airfare for one of our youth and her mother to travel for her surgery at the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. We are thankful that she is healing up very nicely!

The theme for July 25's Youth Day was "Be Ready," with CUC student Joseph Augustine as guest speaker. The Sabbath afternoon was particularly hot, but it was perfect weather for our Youth Ministries outreach activity in Mill Woods Park--the distribution of free cold bottled water with a tag of introduction to our church.

Pastor Lawton Lowe's Death

Elder Lawton Lowe, a long-time warrior for God laid down his burdens Friday, August 28, 2009, after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. As many of you know Lawton was used mightily by God. Thousands of individuals in Canada and throughout various parts of the world will trace their introduction to Jesus back to a Lowe evangelistic meeting. Please pray for Esther, Gary, Rick, and the entire family as they process the loss of their loved one. 60th Wedding Anniversary

Vernon and Doreen Gimbel celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 25, 2009. They were married in the CUC Chapel in 1949. They have two children, Ivan (Sharon) of Lacombe, and Sherry Lee (Rob) Olynick of Quill Lake, Sask. They also have five grandchildren and two great-granchildren. The Gimbels reside in Lacombe.

Yellowknife Church Celebrates Landmark Baptism

(August 15, 2009) Landmarks are significant events in our lives that we like to celebrate. On Sabbath, August 15, the Yellowknife church celebrated the baptism of Griffin Wile. Just a few minutes before his baptism, Griffin’s mom, Wendy, shared the reason this was a landmark baptism. Griffin is the only person to be born in Yellowknife, attend the church all his life, and to join its membership through baptism. Pastor Brad Dahr had the honour of baptizing Griffin into the body of Christ with Griffin’s dad, Blake, and sister, Mikelle, singing a beautiful special music.

Stony Plain Trade Fair Hosts Parkland Church Booth

This last April saw the Parkland (Spruce Grove & Stony Plain) Church participating in the local Stony Plain Trade Fair with a booth table laden with books, magazines, DVDs, etc. A draw for a couple of DVDs was very popular as was a white prayer sheet on which people could write the first names of people they wanted special prayer for. Everyone who passed by was given an envelope with a letter from the church, a mini Signs magazine, application forms etc. Especially popular were engraved pens advertising the church and handmade bookmarks with Bible verses and attractive pictures. It was indeed a great way to meet people without knocking on doors - they were coming to us! We plan to make this an annual event.

On Sabbath July 11th Pastor Bob Burke had the pleasure of baptizing Esther DuBourt at Foothills Camp, near Bowden. Esther had expressed a desire for baptism two years ago after attending the second Revelation seminar the Camrose Church had held but it was felt she was too young at the time. This time when she again expressed a desire to follow her Lord into the waters of baptism her parents and Pastor Burke agreed that there was no reason to put it off any longer.

Esther was welcomed into full membership in the Camrose Church on Sabbath July 25.

Sedgewick Baptisms

On Sabbath, June 20, the Sedgewick Seventh-day Adventist Church came together to celebrate the baptisms of five of their young people. Ethan Bownes, Jordan Bownes, Emma Amundson, Bradley Grovet and Brayden Grovet all made a public declaration of their decision to follow Jesus Christ through baptism and to become members of the Sedgewick congregation.

After studying with Debi Anderson for 21 weeks these young people all decided they wanted to be baptized together. Debi also arranged for each of the Sedgewick elders and the pastor to come and present at least one of the study topics each.

Pastor Bob Burke had the privilege of performing the baptisms of each one of these precious young souls. Pastor Burke shared a message entitled “The Family of God” taken from Galatians 3:26-29.

The service was followed by a potluck and fellowship.

Over 180 individuals have been baptized this year in the Alberta Conference. There have been quite a few evangelistic meetings throughout the conference with many more scheduled this summer and fall.
Ordination to the gospel ministry took place for four Alberta pastors on the final Sabbath of the Alberta Camp Meeting. Pastors Julio Morales, James Rooney, Dario St. Louis, and David Streifling were consecrated following a message presented by Nilton Amorim, Executive Secretary of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada.
Calagary Metro Filipino Church celebrated their first anniversary on Sabbath, July 25. They were joined by Pastors Mark Johnson and Romulo Daquila from the Alberta Conference. Many guests were present for the special services.
Iglesia Adventista Maranatha Calgary (Calgary Maranatha Spanish Company) streams live video of the worship services each Sabbath. As high as two dozen persons at a time have joined the services online.
Approximately 220 Pathfinders from Alberta will travel to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the International Pathfinder Camporee held there this August. They will join over 35,000 other Pathfinders from around the world for this special event.
Three Master Guides and six Pathfinder Leadership Awards for continuing education in Pathfinder Leadership were granted at an investiture at camp meeting this year. Special guest, James Black, North American Youth Leader, was present for the investiture.
The first ever Sudanese evangelistic meeting in Canada held for Sudanese by Sudenese was held in Calgary during June. Five persons were baptized and additional followup is underway. Lay evangelists used Share Him materials on their computers to conduct these meetings.
Prairie Adventist Christian eSchool (PACeS) is an Alberta Government approved eSchool where students access Adventist education through high speed Internet. New Logo for Yellowknife SDA Church

The Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church has been sharing the hope of Jesus Christ with the people of Yellowknife. More than a slogan, this is a way of life. To graphically capture our mission, Pastor Brad Dahr consulted with Simone Smalling at Nuplex Printing (nuplexprinting.ca) of Calgary. The result is a new logo that captures the spirit of what God is doing in Yellowknife. The image reminds us of 2 Corinthians 5:14 with Christ’s love compelling us to go out sharing the hope of Jesus. The logo will be put on all sorts of things so that as we demonstrate God’s love in tangible and practical ways, sharing the hope of Jesus Christ with those around us, our community will have a visible reminder of the church.

Filipino-Canadian Camp Meeting - August 20-23, 2009

On the weekend of July 17-18, 2009, a deaf ministries group met at the Sherwood Park SDA Church for a "Deaf Reach" Seminar. The audience was comprised of individuals from Edmonton, Calgary, Ryley, Clive, Winnipeg, Ontario, New York, and Maryland. Pastor Trexler is the director of Adventist Deaf Ministries, and this seminar is one they are now giving in various locations around North America.

November 2008 was an auspicious time for Grande Prairie as the Lighthouse Branch Sabbath School opened their doors. Formed from evangelistically orientated individuals from the Grande Prairie SDA Church, the Branch Sabbath School has prospered.

June 2009 was another auspicious day as the Branch Sabbath School became a company. With 18 charter members and 35 – 40 people in attendance each Sabbath, great things are in store. Evangelistic outreach plans are already in motion. We ask for your prayers and support as we work in this part of the Lord’s vineyard.

Pastor Darrell Beaudoin Evangelizes Grande Prairie

God has once again blessed the efforts of His people in working towards the salvation of souls through public evangelism. Pastor Darrell Beaudoin accepted his first invitation to conduct a prophecy seminar outside of his own district; and preached a powerful, clear, and Spirit-filled seminar that inspired many here in Grande Prairie. As the hall of the downtown Sandman Hotel began to fill up with more and more with visitors, we began to get more and more excited about this venture in evangelism. By the time the opening night presentation began, we had over 50 guests outside of the church members that also came to support this outreach.

When we transferred the seminar from the hall to the church after the 7^th presentation, we still had over 35 guests attending; and by the end of the seminar we had over 30 guests in attendance. We celebrated the baptism of four precious souls over two Sabbaths, and are anticipating more commitments to Christ in baptism from the five others that are continuing to study and worship with us since the seminar ended.

The Grande Prairie Church has been so thankful to Pastor Beaudoin for being willing to come and serve evangelistically here in our grand city. His seminar was professional from start to finish; from cutting edge equipment and props, to his excellent rapport with the guests attending. He brought a fresh approach to the “Bible Questions” time by opening the floor before the presentations on certain nights, and demonstrated an outstanding knowledge of prophecy and the Bible. We have already agreed we would love to have him come again for a future seminar, and would highly recommend his seminar to any churches in our conference looking to do a live evangelistic prophecy seminar.

Yellowknife Baptism

The land of the midnight sun was praising God as the Yellowknife church celebrated our sixth baptism of the year. On June 27, 2009, Pastor Brad Dahr had the honour of baptizing Phil Winsor into the body of Christ. Phil had been thinking about spiritual things for awhile when he met Yellowknife church member, Albert Dobin. Albert and Phil became good friends, and they began studying the Bible together. Phil was convicted of the Sabbath truth and started attending church about two months ago. During a baptism in May, he responded to a baptism call. Phil's favourite song is "The River," the baptism theme song for the church, so we had no problem singing it with gusto for him. Already an active member in a small group, Phil is open to where God will want him to serve in Yellowknife.

Joyce Wasylyshen Retirement

Joyce Wasylyshen was honoured at two retirement parties--one in house at the Alberta Conference office, and the second at the Tanoa Restaurant in Red Deer on June 4, 2009 where conference office staff and families joined her and her husband, Jerry, as we enjoyed delicious food and fellowship in recognizing Joyce's immense contribution to the Alberta Conference by her faithfulness and hard work during the past 19+ years. She first served as secretary in the Sabbath School and Personal Ministries, then Treasury, and then, finally, as administrative secretary for the Vice President for Administation. Her untiring efforts and devotion to the eAdventist on line clerk reporting program has been important and will be valued in years to come. We wish Joyce and Jerry a happy retirement as they can enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle and can spend time with their children and grandchildren.

On June 23, 2009, the Alberta Conference office staff and families hosted a baby shower new son, Joshua, born to Eunice and Richard Nyaribo. Eunice and Richard are so delighted with the new addition to their family and the conference office family enjoyed admiring little Joshua, along with a lot of laughter and fun as we celebrated his arrival that evening. Eunice has filled the role as school accountant and local church auditor in the conference office. We wish them God's abundant blessings as they nurture and love this baby.

Marjorie Ellen (Rowe) Doyle was born July 1, 1927, the oldest in a family of six children, in Horizon, Saskatchewan. She passed to her rest on June 8, 2009. She is survived by her four sons, Mark (Lily), Dr. Allen (Sue), Bryan, and James (Jimena), her brothers and sisters, Florence Hanson, Robert (Ligaya) Rowe, Eunice Childers, Ruth Rowe, Arther (Lavin) Rowe, 8 grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her daughter Sharlene and nephew Jason Childers.

Fort McMurray Church Prophecy Seminar Results in Two More Baptisms

The Fort McMurray church was pleased to welcome Noel Carriere (centre of photo) into membership by baptism and to bless Andrew Denton's (right in photo) decision to be re-baptized on June 6, 2009.

This comes as a result of another prophecy seminar. The Fort McMurray church has conducted nine prophecy seminars over the past 28 months with approximately 19 accessions and more baptisms being planned. There are also other seminar interests attending church each Sabbath. The church is beginning to reach capacity attendance and plans are in the works for renovations and expansion.

Dr. Neil Nedley

Neil Nedley, M.D., is a full-time practicing physician in Internal Medicine with emphasis in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Preventive Medicine, Mental Health, and the difficult-to-diagnose patient. He did his undergraduate studies at Andrews University, majoring in Biochemistry.

He graduated from medical school in 1986 with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Loma Linda University, ranking in the top 10% of his class.

Dr. Nedley has held numerous nutrition seminars, cooking schools (with his wife, Erica), and depression and stress seminars. He has authored the widely acclaimed comprehensive, yet readable book on the relationship between nutrition, lifestyle, and health entitled Proof Positive: How to Reliably Combat Disease and Achieve Optimal Health through Nutrition and Lifestyle, now in its fourth printing. His latest book, Depression--The Way Out explains his 20 week cure (no dependence on drugs or counselling) that has helped many feel great while achieving optimal mental performance.

Dr. Nedley lives with his wife and four boys and enjoys reading, running, tennis, classical music, and playing with his boys.

Peers SDA Company Presents a Booth at Family Barbecue

At the Yellowhead County Family Barbecue June 13 2009.

The Peers Seventh-day Adventist Company was pleased to have a display booth at the Yellowhead County Family Barbecue and trade show on June 13 2009. The event was held at the McLeod Valley Recreation Grounds.
Our church showcased a healthy lifestyle. We had many people stop by the booth to sample the Quinoa Salad and a Walnut Spread, all foods that are great for heart health.
We gave out two door prizes. Sarah Leach of the Yellowhead County won the cookbook and health DVD; Lindsay Kuilboer won the prize for children 10 years and under; she won two activity/story books.
We had a great crowd at the booth with lots of interest in the food sampling.
The Family Barbecue was a great event for our church to participate in and be visible in the community. We met many wonderful people and our bible workers Egbert and Keishauni George were able to link up with people interested in bible study.

Yellowknife Celebrates Four Baptisms

(April 4, 2009) 2009 is the Yellowknife church’s year of preparing for rain. As the farmer prepares the field and plants the seed in faith so they would prepare themselves, their ministries, and their plans and wait on God to bring the rain. On January 31, 2009 the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church reclaimed their baptismal tank. After sitting dormant for almost two years it had become a great place to store things. No longer. As the church members gathered around the tank they prayed for a blessing and they prayed their commitment to faithfully fill the tank the first Sabbath of each month. In faith, they knew that God would fill the tank with people who have fallen in love with Him. On April 4, God’s kingdom grew as the Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church celebrated the baptism of four youth - Shenel Cruz, Tristha Cruz, Advent Cruz, and Terrence Abalos. Pastor Brad Dahr had the honour of baptizing Terrence but he invited ordained elder Noel Cruz to baptize his children. Shenel, Tristha, Advent, and Terrence were active participants during the Amazing Adventure children’s evangelism series led by members Sheila and Noel Cruz. It was a powerful moment when the four youth came out in baptismal robes and led the congregation in singing “The River.” All four youth are active in ministry, participating enthusiastically in Sabbath School class, during worship, and in our children’s ukulele band that visits the seniors center twice a month. Shenel and Tristha are crew leaders in the church’s VBS that starts June 29.
